In the Heat of an Endless Day

by Jeremiah Nighthawk Taylor

In the south long ago
Black men were moving slow,
Breakin’ their backs in the midday sun.
In the place where they dwelled
It was known, white folks felt,
They were lower than anyone.

In the heat of an endless day,
They sang their songs and they prayed.
[Repeat]

Many would sing of their Lord and their King
And prayed for His soon return.
Jesus suffered for you.
He died a sacrifice too,
From the preacher, they did learn.

As they fought to redeem the day,
They sang their songs and they prayed.
[Repeat]

Down through one-hundred years
And many millions of tears,
Their music plays its role.
It praises God in song, in eternity long
And touch the human soul.

As we fight to redeem the day,
We’ll sing their songs and we’ll pray.
[Repeat]
